Make a sticker online: a step-by-step guide from the printing house

A practical guide to ordering stickers online: from choosing the technology (digital laser printing, large-format vinyl printing, UV-DTF, plotter cutting) to accepting the print run. Breakdown of materials, layouts, and common mistakes.

Make a sticker online: a step-by-step guide from the printing house

Ordering stickers online is standard practice for entrepreneurs and marketers. It's faster and more transparent than calling printing houses: the calculator shows the price immediately, and the layout goes into production without intermediaries. At Seventh Legion printing house (Yekaterinburg, Sovetskaya St., 39, operating since 2011), the share of online sticker orders is about 60% of the total volume. This article provides an overview of technologies, step-by-step instructions, and common mistakes we see in layouts.

Sticker printing methods: what to choose for the task

The modern market offers several technologies for producing stickers. The choice depends on the print run, material, operating conditions, and budget. Let's consider the main methods available when ordering online.

Digital laser printing on film and self-adhesive

The most common method for runs up to 2,000 pieces. Laser digital machines print directly on roll-fed self-adhesive film or paper. The technology does not require plate making — the layout is sent for printing immediately after verification. The resolution of modern digital machines reaches 1200 dpi, comparable to offset. Digital laser printing is suitable for stickers on vinyl (glossy, matte, transparent) and on paper. Main limitations: standard CMYK color gamut and sensitivity to UV without additional protection. For outdoor stickers, lamination is mandatory — matte or glossy film extends the service life from 3–6 months to 1–2 years.

Large format and interior printing on vinyl film

For large formats — from A3 to several meters — wide-format printing on vinyl films is used. Technology: solvent, eco-solvent, or latex printing. Solvent inks penetrate the structure of the PVC film, ensuring resistance to moisture and mechanical impacts. Latex printing (water-based) is a more environmentally friendly option with vibrant colors, but it requires a finishing coating for outdoor durability. Interior printing on vinyl is used for designing storefronts, stands, and furniture. When ordering online, it is important to specify the exact dimensions and type of surface on which the sticker will be applied: transparent vinyl is suitable for windows and smooth plastic, and matte calendered vinyl with low shrinkage is suitable for textured walls.

UV-DTF and DTF printing

UV-DTF (Direct to Film with UV curing) is a technology where ink is applied to a special transfer film and polymerized under ultraviolet light. The film is then transferred to the surface using a heat press. Advantages: high adhesion to complex materials (ceramics, metal, plastic, wood, textiles), vibrant colors, ability to print white and create volumetric tactile effects. UV-DTF stickers are resistant to scratches, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. The technology is suitable for single-piece and small-batch production — from branding mugs to decorating cabinet furniture. DTF (without UV) is a simpler option for textiles: ink is applied to a film, then transferred to fabric using a heat press. In the context of stickers, UV-DTF is the primary method for souvenir and promotional products.

Plotter cutting of vinyl film

If the sticker should follow the contour of the image (kiss-cut), a plotter is used. The plotter cuts the image from colored vinyl film (without printing) or from a digitally printed sheet. This method is suitable for single-color logos, signs, and car decals. When ordering online, you need to provide a vector layout (AI, EPS, CDR) with clear outlines. Plotter cutting is an economical option for runs from 10 pieces: no costs for ink and lamination, only the cost of film and labor. The downside is a limited number of colors (usually 1–2, rarely 4 when using multi-layer appliqué).

Step-by-step guide: how to order stickers online

The ordering process at the 'Седьмой Легион' printing house is designed so that no more than 10 minutes pass from uploading the layout to sending it to print. The sequence of steps is standard for most online services.

Step 1. Prepare the layout

Layout requirements: AI, EPS, PDF or TIFF format; CMYK color mode (not RGB); resolution from 300 dpi. Convert fonts to outlines, otherwise they will be replaced with standard fonts during printing. For contour cutting, a vector outline in a separate layer is required. If there is no layout, use the online designer on the printing house website or order design separately.

Step 2. Choose the technology and material

Depending on the task: digital laser printing for standard stickers on vinyl or paper; wide-format printing for large formats; UV-DTF for one-off souvenir stickers; plotter cutting for single-color contour stickers. Specify the size (for example, 70x50 mm), print run (from 50 pieces), film type (glossy, matte, transparent, white) and whether lamination is needed. For outdoor use, lamination is mandatory.

Step 3. Upload the layout and check the preview

The system will automatically check the layout for errors: low resolution, non-standard color profile, lack of bleed. For stickers with contour cutting, bleed must be at least 2 mm on each side. Important elements (text, logo) should be inset 3–4 mm from the edge. If there are no marks, the printing house will add them for free.

Step 4. Pay and specify the delivery method

We accept cards, e-wallets, and bank transfers for legal entities. Delivery in Yekaterinburg — by courier or pickup from Sovetskaya St., 39. To other regions, we ship via CDEK or Russian Post — delivery time from 3 to 10 days depending on distance.

Step 5. Receive the finished order

After payment, the order goes into production. Urgent printing (1 day) is possible for runs up to 500 pieces. The usual time is 2–3 business days. We pack the finished stickers in a thick envelope with protection against bending.

Important nuances: layout, print run, and materials

Errors in layout preparation are the most common cause of defects. According to our statistics, about 15% of online sticker orders require corrections due to incorrect color profile or low resolution. To avoid problems, remember three rules.

Color model: CMYK, not RGB

The monitor works in RGB, printing in CMYK. If you send a layout in RGB, the output colors will be dull and dirty. This is especially critical for green and blue shades — they lose saturation. Convert your layout to CMYK in advance. If in doubt, order a color proof.

Bleeds for trimming

Stickers with contour cutting require bleeds — at least 2 mm on each side. Otherwise, a white strip will remain along the edge after cutting. Example: if the sticker is 50x50 mm, the layout should be 54x54 mm including bleeds.

Print run and savings

The larger the print run, the cheaper each sticker. The optimal print run for small businesses is 300–500 pieces. When the print run increases 10 times, the price per piece drops about 3 times, but if stickers are needed for a one-time promotion, it makes no sense to overpay for warehouse stock.

Common mistakes when ordering stickers online

Over 15 years of work, we have accumulated statistics: about 20% of online sticker orders require revision. Here are the top 5 mistakes clients make.

Error 1. Using an RGB layout

Colors on screen and in print differ. The client sees bright green but gets olive. Solution: convert to CMYK and order a color proof for critical orders.

Error 2. Saving on lamination

Without lamination, a vinyl sticker outdoors loses color in 3–4 months. With lamination — it lasts 1–2 years. The surcharge for lamination is 20–30% of the cost, but it extends the sticker's life many times over.

Error 3. Text too small

On a 30x30 mm sticker, a 6 pt font will be unreadable. The minimum size for vinyl is 8 pt, for paper — 10 pt. If the text is important, increase the sticker size or use a larger font.

Error 4: Wrong film choice for the surface.

Transparent vinyl is suitable for glass and plastic. White vinyl or paper is suitable for cardboard and wood. If you stick white film on a transparent bottle, the edge will be visible. Transparent film on a dark surface is also bad: the color is distorted.

Error 5: Ordering without proofing the layout.

Clients often upload a layout and pay immediately without looking at the preview. As a result — typos, incorrect sizes, lack of bleeds. Always check the preview and, if in doubt, call the technologist.
